The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) committee for the Center for Life Sciences Education (CLSE) was formed in Autumn 2022. The purpose of this committee is to identify and correct marginalizing policies and procedures within the CLSE and to create a nurturing learning environment for all students and staff that are affiliated with the CLSE.
The committee has representatives from each of the following CLSE roles:

Research/Assessment/Teaching Professional Development
Administration
Lecturer
Graduate student
Undergraduate student
Faculty
The committee meets regularly throughout the academic year to identify new initiatives, review progress, and plan next steps.
Current (in progress) initiatives:
- Incorporating diverse representation into laboratory introductory materials used by lab instructors.
- Compiling training for staff, faculty, and instructors to access.
- Analyzing survey data to make recommendations for improvement.
Implemented initiatives:
- Developed a list of inclusive teaching priorities that will be encouraged in all CLSE classes.
- Drafted a mission statement for the CLSE Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Committee.
- Surveyed the students, staff, and faculty of the CLSE to understand the climate and areas for improvement.
- Evaluated current policies regarding absences and make recommendations for a standard, inclusive policy.
- Developed a referral system with information posted in labs and on course Carmen pages.
