Teaching Professional Development

Teaching Professional Development

The Center for Life Sciences Education (CLSE) is committed to preparing the next generation of biology educators through ongoing, individualized professional development grounded in evidence-based teaching. Each semester, CLSE instructors participate in a structured course that supports their growth as effective and reflective educators. Through this program, instructors explore and apply student-centered practices such as active learning, Universal Design for Learning, backward design, lesson planning, and formative assessment. They engage with university-wide teaching resources—including workshops offered by The Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, University Libraries, and the Center for Ethics and Human Values—to build practical skills and deepen their understanding of how students learn.

Our instructors gain confidence in creating inclusive, engaging learning environments that foster student belonging and success in STEM. Within a strong community of practice, instructors participate in peer mentoring, learning communities, and journal and book groups that connect educational theory to classroom practice. They share insights through peer observations, reflective writing, and collaboration on laboratory curriculum improvements. Students consistently report that CLSE instructors make their courses more engaging and relevant to their goals as scientists. Many of our alumni go on to pursue advanced degrees in STEM, medicine, or education, and some have received recognition as the CLSE Outstanding Lab/Recitation Instructor. Through this program, CLSE nurtures not only skilled instructors but also thoughtful educators prepared to make a lasting impact in higher education and beyond.

Our student instructors are highly valued members of our program.  Below are two courses specifically designed for our instructors and others who are interested in teaching college biology.

5001 - Topics in Biology Teaching

6001 - College Biology Teaching

Biology 5001 is an elective for the Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching.  Biology 6001 is the discipline teaching course for that certificate.
