The section of Biology 1113H taught by Drs. Richard Swenson and Steven Justiniano has a special service learning component.  Students in that class participate in a collaborative service learning project to help students develop a connection between concepts learned in the classroom and real-world scientific problems affecting the community. Students complete both a service activity and a related external learning activity designed to support students in recognizing the correlation between classroom concepts and real issues and problems in the community. In this case, the service activity is volunteering at the Multiple Myeloma Opportunities for Research and Education (MMORE) Gala and the learning activity is a tour led by Dr. Don Benson of the lab where multiple myeloma researchers use equipment purchased with funds raised at the gala. MMORE is one of three different organizations with whom students may choose to work.  The other two organizations are the Red Cross and Waterman Farms. Course Coordinator Amy Kulezsa oversaw the development and implementation of these activities and Dr. Justiniano is taking the lead in organizing the activities this term.
