Successful students in Biology 3775S will:

  • Explain the basics of how the brain and memory function, and their relevance to health and well-being
  • Explain the fundamental concepts and pathology of dementia
  • Compare and contrast the different types of dementia and how they differ from normal cognitive changes due to aging
  • Engage in critical and logical thinking to evaluate the use of cognitive tests and imaging techniques in the diagnosis of dementia
  • Describe the abnormal physiological mechanisms underlying dementia
  • Summarize current pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options for dementia
  • Assess the effectiveness and limitations of various treatment options
  • Critically review and discuss recent advances in dementia research using the primary literature
  • Critique potential new therapies and ongoing clinical trials
  • Identify the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle risk factors associated with dementia
  • Explain the public health implications, including prevalence, of dementia
  • Evaluate ways in which new discoveries and technologies can influence individuals, institutions, and society in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dementia
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective communication techniques with individuals who have dementia by understanding how their thinking and perceptions are altered
  • Develop strategies to empathize and relate to their family members and caregivers
  • Examine the economic burden of dementia on society, families, and individuals, and strategies for care, prevention and awareness
  • Explore and analyze the psychological, emotional, and legal impacts of dementia on caregivers and families from various perspectives
  • Examine and analyze the different types of long-term care options available, such as long-term care insurance and Medicaid, from theoretical and policy perspectives
  • Debate the ethical issues related to the care and treatment of individuals with dementia, including quality of life, right to dignity, and maintenance of independence
  • Identify and evaluate strategies for promoting health and well-being through the support systems and resources available for individuals with dementia and their caregivers
