Why should I major in biology?

A biology degree from The Ohio State University is incredibly versatile as it prepares students for a wide range of possible careers such as health professionals, research scientists, educators, conservation scientists, lawyers, etc. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the occupational outlook for the top careers for those with a biology degree is strong and expected to continue growing. Additionally, the salary is competitive as the median salary for someone with a biology degree is higher than the average for other fields. When you major in biology at OSU, you’ll learn about the natural world and gain research skills that are transferable to any number of possible careers. 

How does the CLSE help me achieve my goals?

In the Center for Life Sciences, we know students seek a program that provides the opportunities for them to achieve their career goals while also allowing flexibility to explore various interests. The CLSE serves as a nexus for the life science departments at OSU, and students that major in biology will take classes in Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, and Biochemistry. This means our students work with world renowned faculty from across the life sciences.  

Because there are so many options for our students, they work with their advisors to choose a specialization within the major that align with their goals and interests:

  • Pre-health Professions
  • Life Sciences Education
  • Integrated General Biology
  • Forensic Biology

Depending on their goals, some students will choose to work with their advisor to develop an individualized specialization. Many students that major in biology plan to continue their education in graduate or professional school. The specializations were designed with this in mind, and the requirements for most graduate and professional programs are built into the curriculum. 

What are the career options for my degree?

A biology degree opens the door to a wide range of career paths across healthcare, research, education, and environmental fields. Some careers can be pursued with a bachelor’s degree, while others require graduate or professional school.

Biology is also the most common major for pre-health students at Ohio State, making it a strong foundation for students interested in medical, dental, veterinary, and other health professions.

At the same time, many students discover new interests along the way. Through coursework, research, and experiential learning, biology majors build skills that translate across industries, allowing them to explore multiple career pathways.
